Where Is Gary Oba?
| Officer-designee for Fujian Gary Oba |
Message from Gary ObaHi. My name is Gary Oba, and I’ve been assigned as the Consulate’s officer-designee for Fujian. My job is to promote stronger ties between the Consulate and Xiamen (and Fujian Province). I’m delighted to have the job that I do. I had long heard that Xiamen is one of China’s most beautiful cities, but it wasn’t until I made my first trip to Xiamen during the period from September 7 – 10, that I discovered that the city’s natural beauty is complimented by the friendliness and the hospitality of its people. Our consulate delegation participated in the China International Fair for Investment and Trade (CIFIT), including the opening of the American Pavilion and an “Invest in America” seminar. We had good exchanges and meetings with Xiamen Mayor Liu Cigui, Xiamen University President, Dr. Zhu Chongshi, and a number of other officials and business leaders. We deeply appreciate their warm welcome and the shared desire to improve exchanges and mutual understanding between Americans and the residents of Xiamen. Since the first U.S. consular office in Xiamen was opened more than 160 years ago, that connection has a long history—and although there have been ups and downs—it’s clear that that connection, especially with today’s global economy, is growing closer and closer. This new website is directed at highlighting our shared connection. During my assignment in China, I would like to do everything that I can to increase the level of friendship and mutual understanding between our two peoples. I hope that you’ll check back often to see what’s new on this website, and I hope that you’ll let us know if you have suggestions or recommendations. Thanks.
